Today is the day to be thankful for many things, but most of all I am thankful for the food I will be serving to my family today. In addition to fresh air and clean water, good food is a primary ingredient for our overall health and well being.
But how did I come by this food? I did not grow it or hunt it like my ancestors once did. I depended on a farmer to produce it for me. So, thank you farmers!
I made a valiant effort to include a few local, Kentucky-grown foods and ingredients. I am extremely thankful that our agriculture industry is evolving to support our farmers who want to cater to the needs of the local food community. This brings so much wonderful opportunity for all of us. But I don’t want to forget our commodity farmers in the Bluegrass, who make tremendous contributions to our economy. They continue to improve their practices to give us safe, abundant food options.
I am also thankful I have access to farmers outside of Kentucky. Without them, I would not be able to craft the cranberry salad I have planned for the day, which includes cranberries from Wisconsin, clementine oranges from Spain, pineapple from Hawaii, and pecans from Mississippi. These are all things that do not grow here in Kentucky.
Lastly, I am so thankful that agriculture has provided me such a rich life. I could not imagine enjoying any better "job" than supporting our farmers. I have worked in the industry for 15 years, and my Ag family continues to grow in leaps and bounds. The farming community is full of passionate, God-loving people, and I am fortunate to call them friends.
